Allurion is not just a balloon; it is an integrated program made up of the balloon + a digital ecosystem + physician follow-up. While many candidates focus on the question "when is the balloon placed, when does it come out?", the program's real value — the 6-month structure that supports behavior change — can be overlooked. In this article, we explain each stage.
The Overall Structure of the Program
| Phase | Duration | Main Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation | 1–2 weeks | Eligibility assessment, lab tests |
| Balloon placement | Day 1 | 15-min procedure |
| Active balloon period | 16 weeks (~4 months) | Weight loss + habit change |
| After the balloon passes | 2 months | Consolidation + follow-up |
| Total | ~6 months | Foundation for lasting change |
Stage 1: Preparation (1–2 Weeks)
Eligibility Consultation
Your physician evaluates your medical history, BMI, and contraindications. Lab tests (complete blood count, biochemistry, thyroid) are ordered.
Set Up the Digital Tools
- Install the Allurion App on your phone
- The Allurion Scale (smart Wi-Fi scale) is set up at home and connected to the app
- Account activation and goal setting
Nutritional Counseling (if applicable)
Some clinics conduct a nutritional assessment before placement. At this stage, protein targets and basic nutrition rules are discussed.
Stage 2: Placement Day
Duration: ~15 minutes
Anesthesia: None
Where: An authorized Allurion clinic
Steps
- You swallow the gelatin capsule at the tip of the catheter with water
- The position is confirmed with fluoroscopy
- The capsule is filled with ~550 mL of liquid; the catheter is withdrawn
- 30–60 minutes of observation; you can go home
The procedure is complete. You can drive. You can return to work — though mild discomfort is expected in the first few days.
Stage 3: The First 2 Weeks — Adaptation
This period is the most challenging part of the program. Most patients temporarily experience:
- Nausea and a feeling of fullness
- Decreased appetite
- Fatigue
- Mild abdominal cramps
This is expected and usually resolves within 5–10 days. If needed, your physician can provide antiemetic support.
Nutrition: A gradual transition from liquids → purees → soft foods (also read: Nutrition Guide After a Gastric Balloon →)
Stage 4: Weeks 3–8 — The Period When Weight Loss Accelerates
Once adaptation is complete, the program settles into a routine:
- Daily Allurion Scale measurement → data is automatically transferred to the app
- Food diary logging
- The physician monitors data through the Virtual Care Suite and intervenes remotely if needed
- Gradually increase physical activity
Dejeu et al.'s 571-patient study (Clin Pract 2024, PMID: 38804393) showed markedly better outcomes in patients who used the digital tools regularly.
Stage 5: Weeks 9–16 — Locking In Habits
This period is the most strategic link in the program. The balloon is still in place but is no longer noticeable in daily life. The real work lies in habit consolidation:
- Meal times and portion patterns should become established
- Eating speed and chewing habits should change
- The capacity to re-read hunger and satiety signals should develop
The critical question: "Can I maintain this routine even without the balloon?"
Stage 6: The Balloon Passing (~Week 16)
Thanks to its programmed special composition, the balloon deflates on its own. Deflation usually occurs within a few hours; the balloon is then passed through the digestive system.
How will you know?
- A change in urine color (from the balloon's dyed fluid)
- A decrease in the feeling of fullness
- A slight increase in stomach sounds
This process is normal. If you experience any pain or severe symptoms, call your physician.
Stage 7: Months 5–6 — Consolidation and Long-Term Preparation
The 2 months after the balloon passes are the most critical period. During this time:
- Maintaining nutritional habits at the standards of the "balloon period"
- Continuing weight tracking
- Physician check-ups at month 3 and month 6
Caballero et al.'s 522-patient study (Obes Surg 2025, PMID: 40676353) showed that 95% of patients maintained their weight loss 12 months after the balloon passed. Behind this success lies the program's behavioral-change infrastructure.
The Allurion Ecosystem: 3 Tools, 1 Program
