"Is weight regained after the balloon ends?" — there isn't an Allurion candidate who hasn't heard this question. The right answer should be based on data, not on hearsay. This article presents the clinical data and the factors that determine regain.
Clinical Data: One Year Later
The multicenter study by Caballero and colleagues, published in 2025, provides verified clinical data on long-term weight maintenance in patients who completed the Allurion Program:
Study: 522 patients, international multicenter Measurement point: 12 months after the balloon was passed Publication: Obesity Surgery 2025 PMID: 40676353 →
Result:
In the clinical study, 95% of patients maintained their weight loss one year after the balloon was passed (PMID 40676353).
This data shows that the generalization "the balloon ends, the weight comes back" does not reflect the clinical reality.
Individual results may vary. A group average does not guarantee an individual outcome.
Why Do Some Patients Regain Weight?
While the 95% rate is strong, every patient's experience is different. Risk factors that increase regain:
1. If Behavioral Change Has Not Taken Hold
The balloon is a mechanical tool — on its own it does not change eating habits. If new habits are not actively acquired during the program, the return to old patterns accelerates once the balloon is passed.
2. If Program Adherence Is Low
The 571-patient study by Dejeu and colleagues (Clin Pract 2024, PMID: 38804393) showed a clear relationship between adherence and outcomes. Those who regularly used the Allurion App and the smart scale achieved better results.
3. If Post-Balloon Follow-Up Is Discontinued
In patients whose nutritional support does not continue after the program is completed, the risk of regain increases. Regular follow-up for 6 months or longer strengthens outcomes.
4. Comparison with GLP-1 RA
When GLP-1 receptor agonists are discontinued, an average of +5.63 kg is regained (18 RCTs, 3,771 patients, EClinicalMedicine 2025, PMID: 41399474). In the Allurion Program, by contrast, 95% of patients maintained their weight loss one year later (PMID 40676353); because the two results come from different study designs, a direct comparison is limited.
What Should You Do to Prevent Regain?
During the Program
- Use the Allurion App food diary regularly
- Take daily measurements with the smart scale — small increases are detected early
- Stabilize your meal routine (a routine you can maintain even without the balloon)
After the Balloon Is Passed
- Continue nutritional tracking — dietitian support is critical in this period
- Make physical activity part of your routine
- Monitor your weight weekly; intervene at the first 2–3 kg of gain ("early warning threshold")
- Schedule physician check-ups at months 3 and 6
"Can the Balloon Be Repeated?"
Yes. The Allurion Program can be repeated. Some patients choose a second program a certain period after completing the first. This decision should be evaluated together with your physician.
Summary
| GLP-1 RA (after stopping) | Allurion (one year later) | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight maintenance | Average +5.63 kg regained after stopping (PMID 41399474) | 95% of patients maintained in the clinical study (PMID 40676353) |
| Mechanism | Drug-dependent | Based on behavioral change |
| Repeat requirement | Continuous medication | Program repetition optional |
