What Is a Swallowable Gastric Balloon?
A swallowable gastric balloon is an FDA-approved medical device that can be placed without endoscopy or anesthesia. Allurion is a program with comprehensive clinical data in this category (FDA PMA approval February 2026; CE Marked, registered with TİTCK).
How Does It Work?
The Allurion capsule is swallowed at the tip of a thin catheter. Once X-ray or ultrasound confirms that it is in the correct position in the stomach, it is filled with liquid and the catheter is withdrawn. The entire procedure takes an average of 15 minutes and does not require a hospital stay.
For 16 weeks, it reduces stomach volume so that you eat less. When the program ends, the balloon deflates on its own and is excreted from the body — no second procedure is required.
Who Is It Suitable For?
- Adults with a BMI ≥ 27 (weight-management support)
- Those who carry surgical risk or prefer not to undergo a surgical method
- People ready to maintain a nutrition + exercise program under physician supervision
- Individuals aged 18–65 who are not pregnant
Clinical Data
In a 19-center study conducted by Ienca et al., 1,770 consecutive patients were evaluated; the mean total body weight loss (TBWL) was reported as 14.9% (Obes Surg 2020, PMID: 32279182).
In a 522-patient study by Caballero et al., 95% of patients were found to have maintained their weight loss one year after the balloon was excreted (Obes Surg 2025, PMID: 40676353).

What Does the Allurion Program Include?
Not just a balloon, but an integrated weight-management program:
- Allurion Scale — Wi-Fi-enabled smart scale, daily tracking
- Allurion App — nutrition diary, step counter, goal tracking
- Virtual Care Suite — physician dashboard, remote patient monitoring
- Allurion Coach — AI-powered habit coach
In a 571-patient study by Dejeu et al., the smart scale + app combination was shown to significantly improve patient adherence and outcomes (Clin Pract 2024, PMID: 38804393).
